What happened to stories for adults in their twenties that want to go on adventures?

You’re tired of reading books that showcase the same teenaged love triangle, stories that feature spectacular fantasy or sci-fi worlds but young protagonists you can’t relate to anymore. So you choose older audience books only to to be assaulted by content you weren’t expecting, which made you instantly slam the book shut. You have outgrown YA novels yet often adult literature completely forgoes hope and light or redemption in the end.

You’ve grown up, but that doesn’t mean your books have to.

Meet Ariel

As a young woman in my twenties, I found it rather hard to relate to the characters of the YA stories. I’m no longer a teenager. I’m no longer in high school. I don’t have the same day to day struggles as I have passed those years of my life. However, I struggled to engage with adult books. Too many times I’ve read a story that seemed promising, only to be blasted in the face with smut or very toxic relationships with family and love interests.

So I kept to YA books even though I have long since passed the target audience. I’m somewhere in the middle of two age groups. The topics didn’t resonate with me. Either being too “mature” or lack the depth or relatability with teen protagonists who don’t deal with the same struggles as I do like responsibility for my own home, navigating life as an adult in my twenties still trying to figure out what being an adult is supposed look like. Yet the YA category still delivered the imaginative worlds I yearned for.

So I began writing. I wrote stories of adults with the struggles of having a full time job, who have bills to pay and yet set in sci-fi and fantasy worlds that are imaginative and exciting as the YA. Settings and stories that twenty-somethings can relate to but that don’t compromise on fun and imagination.
